Recently, we posted “Birds Anonymous,” a very early example of the popular media’s perception of the Twelve Step fellowships. Today we offer perhaps the most accurate depiction of a Twelve Step meeting ever produced for television. In this scene from HBO’s The Wire two court-ordered addicts attend their first NA meeting, where an old-timer gives a short speech. This old-timer, Waylon, is played by musician Steve Earl, who plays it like he’s been there himself.
If you’re interested in his music, here’s Steve E. rockin’ the Cold Creek Correctional Facility as part of his parole agreement: (link) And here’s his home page: (link)
